VISITORS TO THE SAFE HARBOR PETROGLYPHS
PLEASE REMEMBER....
For Native Americans, rock art sites are considered sacred places.
For all of us, the Safe Harbor Petroglyphs are an
irreplaceable part of our cultural heritage.
Please conduct yourself in a careful, respectful manner.
Please do not pull kayaks, canoes, or boats onto petroglyph rocks.
Tie off as recommended on this website
Never use any material (chalk, crayons, paint, etc.) to ‘color in’ the petroglyphs!Defacing the site is illegal!
Please only record the petroglyphs by photographing them. Petroglyphs are best viewed during early morning and late afternoon on sunny days.
Even walking over the rocks and touching the images causes wear. Walk gently, in bare feet. Please avoid walking on images. See petroglyph design charts
No Fires Please!
Be aware that navigation around the rocks is difficult. Many rocks lay just below the surface, and there can be strong currents when generators at the dam are operating. The sites are best visited by experienced operators in kayaks, canoes, or small boats during periods of low flow.
